CAPRICCIO has the subtitle 'Center and Circle'. This indicates that it is based on the duo of the same name for viola and bass clarinet: a sound play from the idea attributed to Hermes Trismegistos, that the nature of the deity resembles a "circle whose center is every-where, and whose circumference is nowhere". On the piano, with a few minor adjustments and especially a different tempo, the whimsi-calness of the polyphonic structure mixed with the traditional sonata form gets even more emphasis and drive.
