The title of the work refers to man's goal-oriented and sustained striving to reach his deepest being, step by step, which is contained in his essential nature. But he has to conquer every new step from the beginning. Hence the form structure of the piece resembles a Perpetuum mobile. The work can be played as a Solo Piece, but also as a Duo. See Explanation. The archaic and sometimes brutal harmonies that this produces are distantly reminiscent of Leoninus and Perotinus' Ars Antiqua. The duration depends on the options selected, but is at least 08:35.
